Keep your Dogs Safe this Autumn

Here at Lawson Animal Feeds, we can provide everything you would need for your dog with a huge variety of different dog food in Darlington and the whole of the North East. Although autumn is arguably one of the most beautiful seasons of the year with the changing leaf colours, frosty morning walks and cosying up in front of the fire, but there are also lots of dangers for your dogs during the autumn months and it is very important that you are aware of the seasonal risks that could be harmful to them. In this blog, we will be discussing some of the things to be mindful of and watch out for this autumn.

Wild Mushrooms/Fungi

Toadstools come in all different shapes colours and sizes, and some can be incredibly harmful to dogs. Even though some types of wild fungi are edible, it can be very difficult to distinguish these from the poisonous ones. While some types may only cause a mild stomach upset, others can be deadly, so take them to the vets immediately.

Acorns

A toxin called tannic can be found in acorns which can make your dog sick or cause stomach upset if ingested. Green acorns contain the highest amounts of tannins and are more poisonous than brown ones, but both are still dangerous so should be avoided at all costs.

Fireworks

Did you know – approximately 80 percent of owners notice a change in their dog’s behaviour during fireworks season, and 48 percent go as far as to say their dogs are scared of them. Events such as Bonfire Night or Diwali where fireworks are a huge component can therefore be incredible stressful for them. Dogs have an amazing sense of hearing so what we think is just a loud bang may actually be deafening to them.

If you’re worried about your dog’s health, always contact your vet immediately!
